What can you say about this article entitled Oversupply of Nurses?

Could it be that the Philippines got too excited about the demand for nurses worldwide that today, there are too many nurses than the healthcare institutions can handle.

A report from the University of the Philippines Dean of the College of Nursing revealed that indeed our country has so many nurses that new nursing graduates are finding it hard to find jobs. The competition among nursing graduates is so stiff that local hospitals can now afford to hire nurses for free.

I wonder if the same thing isn't going to happen here in the U.S. - although in certain areas (where I live) it already has. The local nursing schools are turning out so many 'new grads' that it is becoming difficult (and very competitive) for all of them to find jobs.

However, the news media is still touting that there is a 'nursing shortage' and people are still flocking to get into nursing schools.

we have a university and a college with rn grads and a trade school with lpns but the paper usually have a lot of advertisements for nurses in various facilities many of them offering hire-on bonuses

It would be really interesting to hear a Filipino nurses point of view on this one. I know they work really hard, and are understaffed.

So would it be because they train lots of nurses, but only hire a small amount due to financial reasons?

What is the role of the student in the hospitals there? There must be alot for an article like that to be written. Does this mean that the hospitals are taking advantage of them while they are doing their training?

Doesn't really seem fair; to do a degree for up to five years, and then not be able to work...

Maybe in Philippines.

Here in my country, I hear shortage of nurses everywhere that you can guarantee to get a job within a week as long as you are willing to work and learn anew.

And vacancy for nurses pop up every week.

Boom and bust. That's what I have seen in the past 4 decades. Too many, too few. Over and over.

Of course, it is to the employer's advantage to make us think there are plenty of other nurses waiting to take our spot if we don't do whatever they want us to do, or even if we do, for that matter. Hire new grads, pay them less. Force the older ones out to avoid the cost of their retirement.

It's all old news. Not just in Nursing, either. At least when GM or Ford gets rid of people, they have to give them hefty severance packages. A nurse is lucky if she walks away with her unused vacation and holiday time. You can forget sick time and insurance, of course. And there's hardly anywhere, I think, that has an actual pension any more. Tough, tough times for workers. Maybe better if a Democrat gets elected? Supposedly, Dems are more pro-worker. Supposedly.

Just because the article was written does not mean it has to be true. We can't believe everything people say.

IMO,yes there is oversupply of filipino nurses, when i took my Licensure exam,70,000 took the exams and 38,0000 passed the board!(that was a year ago),this coming June 2008, 100,000 will take the licensure exam, with this number of nurses passing, it's difficult to look for a Job, I for one will be working as a Volunteer Nurses for 6 mos.(no salary) .

Check out the Philippine and International forum and you will see lots about over training in the Philippines and nurses struggling to find work, some even volunteer and some even have to pay the hospital.
