There is much being written on the Philippine forum about this topic and by those from that country.

The issue is that the government has approved all of these schools and many need to be closed for not even having one student pass the NLE, but they are permitted to continue on as in the past. And at last documented count, there are over 950,000 students enrolled in RN programs there now, and there were 632,000 last year. With less than 10,000 green cards available per year for the US, and that includes spouses and children, the chance of getting to the US ever has drastically gone down as well.

And to clear up things, the reputation of the Filipina nurses was built up by those that came here twenty years ago plus, not the ones that are coming out now. How can they have a reputation of being the best when they have not even worked as of yet?

Sorry, but your statement is completely out of wack and one of the reasons that it has been increasingly harder for a nurse from your country to even get placememt in the US. And then if you read the threads about nurses walking from contracts, this does not set well with employers either.

And to top it off, why are so many having issues with passing the speaking part of the language exams when they say that they should not have to write the exams because they trained in English? Some states have exempted the requirement, but the US government has not and they have final say if someone will actually get a visa.

yep..we're oversupplied and there's no vacancy in our country. how that's why i ended as a volunteer nurse in a gov hospital, its the only way i can gain experience.

The Philipines has historically overproduced both nurses and physicians, not to staff Philippino hospitals.. but as an export business. This diaspora would commonly send cash back to the Philippines and this would introduce some much needed capital into the economy.For many years hospitals would hire poorly trained Philippino physicians and nurses. With the change in physician training rules here in the US in the late 80s... requiring US residency programs, the supply of cheap doctors from the Phillipines and all other 3rd world countries has all but dried up.

The situation for nurses is a bit different. In the past an RN could work as a GN for a good bit of time before he/she passed the NCLEX exam. Large metropolitan hospitals would import plane loads of Philippino nurses who would work for well below market wages.... that were much higher than they would have made in the Philippines...live in hospital supplied dorms and apartments... beings a sort of indentured servant until they pass,,, or more likely failed the NCLEX at which point they were sent back to the Philippines and another new grad was brought over.

The government of the Philippines was complicit in this as it was a no cost way of injecting capital into the economy.

Funny you should mention that -- it reminds me that I first heard about that practice many years ago from my sister, who was a travel agent in a large city at the time. The travel agency she worked for had contracts for travel arrangements with a few of the large hospitals in the city, and she described the exact same practice -- her agency would arrange for whole planeloads of Filipina nurses to be flown into the country (by the hospitals), where they worked on temporary permits for several months until they (in most cases) flunked the NCLEX; then they would promptly be flown back home and a new planeload flown in to the city, to work on temporary permits until they flunked the NCLEX, and the cycle was repeated non-stop. Even my sister, who had nothing to do with healthcare (and, believe me, doesn't have a very high opinion of nurses ), thought this was a rather shameful racket that shouldn't be allowed. I'm glad it's been stopped, and I hope the US will never go back to allowing that sort of thing.

where is that place youare talking about? I agree with whatthey say that there is oversupply of nurses, it hard to land a job paid, there's only a job but for free, its unfair!!!!!!!!

It is not the "FILLIPINO" nurse that is one of the best, it is the "ANY" nurse that puts their heart and soul into their work and LISTENS to the needs of their clients that are the best. There are many good nurses out there. All colors.

As far as I see things, the U.S. needs to "take care of our own." Our media is hugely at fault for creating the illusion of "the nursing shortage" and should probably focus on locations of shortages and job placement for US educated nurses if they want to be productive at all. Honestly I would not want to be going to school now because I feel like it is tapering off..This is my second career and I feel very strongly US educated workers getting US jobs. Look what happened to Information Technology? It's gonna happen again but the NCLEX is the only thing keeping US nurses with jobs afloat... (Anyway that is how I feel)
If companies could get away with it they would hire cheap foreign labor all across the board out of greed.
We are a society that needs nurses to show care and compassion and give of ourselves. We want clear communication to carry out the important needs of our clients. Plus, if we pay a lot of $$$ to go to school HERE, then WE as AMERICANS should get the pick of jobs HERE. And by no means is there a shortage in my area, not by a longshot. I have to drive about an hour away..but I love going. 3 hospitals around me were recently under a hiring freeze..
A nice paycheck is just a perk of being a nurse, but it comes with a ton of responsibility and accountability and the NEED to communicate. I know I will get some replys to this so I just want to say that this is just my two cents....and if you don't like it I am sorry but hey freedom of speech.
