Petoskey hospital says majority of nurses want to dump Teamsters

Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey said Tuesday a majority of its registered nurses have signed a petition saying they no longer wanted to be represented by the Teamsters union.

That means the hospital no longer will bargain with the Teamsters in an effort to resolve a strike that began more than two years ago -- one of the longest nursing walkouts in the nation's history. "We're hoping this is the beginning of the end of the strike," hospital spokeswoman Barbara Allen said.

teamster

I was a teamster member for over 4 years/not health care related. The union never did anything for me ever. I am no longer a union fan after having no more raise than 5 cents per year, higher union dues every year/of course, no more job security and still putting up with a crappy place to work. I only made 8.00 per hour and it was not that long ago........

My DH had a job where he paid union dues for Teamsters for years (not a health-care related field). When the employees at his company went on strike, they got little help from the union. After the strike, dh's position was replaced and the Teamsters did nothing for him.

The former president of the Teamsters diverted millions of dollars. Because his "leadership," strike pay from the union went from $300/wk to $50/wk and no one will say where all that money went. Try to live on that. Teamsters scream for financial transparency in the companies they represent, but refuse to account for the money they extort from employees.

IMO, representation by Teamsters is be a blow to the professional image nursing should be associated with. Teamsters has no place around the complex issues that nurses face.

I've heard a lot of bad things about The Teamsters. I still believe many nurses would benefit from unions, just not The Teamsters.
