Re: perscription prices vary widely

Wal-Mart does offer generics for relatively dirt-cheap prices.

Here in St. Louis, there is a grocery store chain that offers over 400 (or maybe 600) generic scripts at $4-6 a pop. It has been a Godsend for several of our patients...whenever drug prices comes up as a cause of noncompliance, I always go to the case manager desk and get them the list of what meds are included. Luckily many of our docs are starting to work with these patients to get them changed over to drugs on these lists.

Same in California. A one month supply for $4 or a 3-month supply for $10.
For some of the medication that my family and I need, this is a cheaper route than going through insurance!
In addition, pharmacies will "price-match" in order to stay competitive.
I love it!

/QUOTE] Me too, 90 day supply of atenolol is less than $6 at sam's club. If I got it through insurance it would be $16. I just bypass insurance.

The cheap drugs only work though when you are on one of them or there is an option to change to one. Most my pts are on multiple drugs and if they are lucky one is on the cheap list.

Again after reading the article I did find it odd. I would almost guess 1- that generic Zofran is cheap at the wholesale level, but 2- the wide price difference is explainable fairly simply. If I am a pharmacy and stock both I am certainly not going to sell the generic at 20% of what the brand name costs, at least until I run out of the brand name or more likely the cost of it comes down as well. To do so would cause hundreds of dollars worth of medication to expire and go to waste. Or the little guy is taking that much of a loss just to generate business..

Re: perscription prices vary widely

I just had to make a brief response. My last dog was on human Cipro frequently for chronic skin infections. Our veterinarian would give us a script to take to our pharmacy. I called MULTIPLE pharmacies in my area to get the best price for the Cipro - prices ranged from $20 to $150! Yes, $20 to $150! The $20 price was a "mom and pop" (locally owned, not a chain) pharmacy. I asked this pharmacy how they could charge so little when other pharmacies were charging as much $150. They were puzzled, and told me Cipro was a very low cost drug. Some of these chain pharmacies are obviously big time ripping people off!

Since this experience, I always tell people to call around and compare prices when they have to self-pay for a prescription.
