14 hospitalized after receiving heparin
At least 20 Rush University Medical Center out-patients have been infected by a contaminated blood-thinning drug. The drug heparin was in pre-filled syringes. More than a dozen people who used them for home infusion therapy had to rush back to the hospital.
A very rare bloodstream infection is affecting a very specific population of people
The heparin syringes were manufactured by Sierra Pre-Filled Incorporated. They all come from the same lot number, 070926H.
"This is entirely an outside vendor selling the pre-filled syringes to the home infusion company. We started calling people we identified as having gotten syringes from this lot number," said Dr. Segreti.
Rush says that all of that product has since been withdrawn. The Centers for Disease Control and the Chicago Department of Public Health have been notified, and there has been a very similar outbreak in Texas.
