Patient Attacks Nurses With HIV Blood

An HIV patient is accused of using her own blood to attack two nurses in Longview. It happened at Good Shepherd hospital back on September 11th. Police say 27 year old Elisa Dickey was being treated for seizures when she became violent.

Dickey allegedly "bit" her own tongue and spit blood at the nurses. She was arrested Thursday and charged with second degree felony assault, and could face a penalty of 20 years in prison. She is being held in the Gregg county jail on 40-thousand dollars bond.

OH MY GOD, that's all I am able to say. OMG
Some people are crazy. That's so scary. Being a nursing student, that really makes you think about your career choice. Good luck to everyone and stay safe.

I have heard stories from nurses, doctors, medics and police officers who say similar things have happened to them. There are many different types of people that happen to be HIV pos. They vast majority of them would never wish it on anyone else. However, there is a small group that have a history of antisocial behavior and having a infectious disease does not make them any nicer. I think this happens more often than anyone realizes. By the way, if the person who did this was actually having a siezure it is going to be real hard to prove that it was on purpose.

I have cop friends who run into this more often than I do as a nurse, and part of me thinks it should be considered attack with a deadly weapon. but then again, I've been bit, scratched , spit and puked on and worse...accidentally AND very much on purpose, like most nurses have.

We may not have knowledge of disease status of our patients. Gives us cause for pause doesn't it.I am much more cautious today than I was 20 yrs ago as I approach my patients. I know better today.

We do the best to protect ourselves.
