Report: Nursing School Enrollments Climb, Strain Capacity; HAP Responds

A new report from the
American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has found that enrollment in U.S. baccalaureate nursing programs increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2004, but schools had to turn away more than 26,000 qualified applicants, primarily due to a shortage of faculty. AACN expressed concern that growing competition for limited courses could encourage nursing students to change majors as they near graduation. Nursing Education Initiative, Pennsylvania’s hospitals have been at the forefront of the effort to boost nursing schools’ capacity.
