Nursing = Choose your own hours....

Do you nurses agree with this article? I'm just wondering how many nurses "choose" to stay after their scheduled shifts too... No mention of that here...

Re: Nursing = Choose your own hours....

It's been my experience that schedulers really do try to honor my shift requests. Unless I'm mandated, I can always say no to OT. There's always casual too. That worked. Nursing's a lot more flexible than my legal assisting job was. So yeah, I'd have to agree.

Nursing is more flexible than your average 9-5 job. But I definitely don't choose my own hours. I like being able to work 3 12hr shifts a week, but I don't choose to work weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime.

Re: Nursing = Choose your own hours....

It is flexible to a point, especially as a casual worker, and you do have the option to take evenings or nights if that works better for childcare, just haven't really had the option to work the amount of day shifts I would like, and vacations are a nightmare to get.
So yes, and no, but you have to admit that they are right, we are recession proof.

From the article...

"Most nurses can choose their own shifts..."

Not where I work! This is hilarious for me and most nurses that I know. I don't choose to work every second Christmas, every second New Year's, parts of most weekends...but I did choose nursing, and I chose an area that isn't 9-5...

Re: Nursing = Choose your own hours....

On my unit we pick the days we want to work. In theory, the manager can change you to a day where they are short, but I've never had it happen to me. Partly because I usually work the days that no one else wants (sun/mon/tues), the other part is that we're shorthanded most of the time anyways so they're happy that anyone wants to work period. I even schedule myself for an extra day every other week just to get a little extra cash in my paycheck....never been denied yet.

You can work your own hours if you get a job in case management working for insurance companies. The nurses that work in CM at the insurance company I work for pretty much have full rein over their hours. I work in prior auth and have to work 8 to 5 Monday through Friday with an HOUR for lunch. I don't have to work weekends or holidays at all and have an extra day off around holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas. The majority of the nurses in CM and Continuos stay review also work from their homes so that's an extra added bonus. I'm hoping that when my year is up, that I will get to go home to work. I have never been so happy to be away from bedside nursing, working weekends, nights, and holidays! With bedside nursing, no, you can't set your own hours, but there are nursing jobs that where you can set your own hours. You just have to look for them.
