A lot of times, I just get a kick out of Grey's Anatomy. I would roll over dead if the doctors did their own enemas and drew their own labs. I was kind of disappointed when Abby from ER advanced to medical school. She was a cool nurse

In all my 20 or so years in nursing I have never seen a doctor do any thing other than procedures they do or listen to a patient's chest. Unbelievable. I would love a drama about us, but I wonder if the real world would believe it.

My favourite is that I'm pretty sure there's only onenurse in Gery's Anatomy. And mostly, she's just involved in hanky panky. And when patients code, there are no nurses anywhere, the room is dark, and the INTERN intubates them all alone. It's phenominal. But hopefully the real world doesn't catch on to these practices, or we'd all be out of jobs! =)

...and also because we'd all be out of patients. Because of course, everyone knows that first-year interns save every patient, and life is then beautiful forever for the patient, their family, and good grief! I'll bet concerted effort among TV interns would net World Peace!

Definitely fiction if a doctor took a patient to the bathroom. How about a sci-fi show where doctors make beds, answer the phone, give baths to patients, or operate IV pumps and monitors. That would definitely fall under the genre of pure fantasy!

Actually, I did see a 3rd year surgical resident help a patient to the commode.

It's rare, but it does happen.

Still I agree these shows are all about doctors who do it all.

I've quit watching most of those shows because I would sit there and yell at the tv "You'll never see a doctor picking through poop!" "He just said he pushed 10 of Vec! You need to push some Versed too!" My husband refuses to watch them with me!

I'm very lucky in my department....my favorite docs can be very self sufficient if they want, AND they very much understand that our department runs the way it does because of teamwork. And then there's the others who want you to hold their hands through everything. And the others who want you to make their decisions for them.

I think it would be quite interesting if all the nurses were gone for a day and the "medicine superheroes" had to do everything. After they stopped crying and called us all in, we'd probably get raises and maybe a little more respect from docs AND patients

That one actually made me laugh out loud! Love it.

Last night, I had a new experience. We have a new attending on our unit, and she was walking past my room and saw me setting up to drop an NG tube in one of our vented babies. She came right in, asked how she could help, held the kiddo's head (I love unsedated patients!) and chatted with me all the while. My jaw almost hit the floor. I hope she doesn't lose that awesomeness.

We also have a couple residents who will don full isolation gear to get a pacifier for one of our babies. Granted, he's been with us 9 months, and everyone loves him. But still ... I'm glad to see that some of them have managed to make it out of med school with their humanities intact!
