Nurses to undergo sex assault interview training

The delicate process of interviewing sexual assault victims and collecting forensic evidence is the subject of a weeklong training session at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. Registered nurses from around the state, and as far away as Louisiana, will become certified sexual assault nurse examiners (SANEs).

In this growing field, forensic nurses provide direct services to individual clients, consultation services to nursing, medical and law related agencies, and expert court testimony in assault cases.

Linda LaDray, Ph.D., a pioneer of the forensic nursing movement who has led the charge for universities to take a leadership role in such training, is a featured presenter. In addition to lectures, the sessions will include instruction in conducting victim interviews and examinations.

Re: Nurses to undergo sex assault interview training

What a wonderful area for nursing to branch out to. I can not think of a more needed area for tender caring and intelligent people to be..in fact to almost seems more natural for nurses to be doing this kind of work than police officers. I wish there was a course in my area to attend, I would be the first to sign up. Hopefully we will see more programs emerge and offer more opportunities for all of us.

You are lucky to have Linda Ledray to teach you. (friend of mine)
Just a note...you will not be a Certified SANE; you will receive a certificate. To be a Nationally Board Certified SANE-A you must sit for the exam and pass it.
I teach an on-line Sexual Assault Examiner course for the University of California Riverside Extension and have students from all over the United States and this session I even have a nurse in Germany!
Good luck and enjoy the class.
Cari RN SANE-A

Burn out...
See my post to Brian about the on-line sexual assault course. My new session just started on June 6th. If you would like to register check the UC Riverside Extension courses...it is on-going.

I found a place in Indianpolis that is offering the program which is closer to home for me. How much of a demand is there for SANEs I know there is a need ..should you plan on keeping your day job or is this a volunteer program?

I don't know what is closer to home than IN YOUR HOME-taking the course on-line...but if Indianapolis is offering a course, that must mean you have a SANE program near you where you could do your preceptorship. The course is usually a minimum of 40 hours with a 45 hour preceptorship. Then you train with the program that you want to join. It is not volunteer...we are professonal nurses with a specialty and not expected to work for free. Where there are sexual assaults, there is a demand. You should keep your job because most programs pay per exam...between $150 and $250 (depends where you are), each exam takes between 3 and 5 hours and you don't have exams everyday. In fact, you may go awhile without any and then have 3 in the same day! Happens all the time, to me. Since the programs have someone on-call 24/7 you never know what time of day or night you may be called in or how long you will have to stay. It takes endurance, excellent writing and communication skills and meticulous evidence collection. It is very detailed work which you must be ready to explain in trial. It won't be the money that draws you to this work. Many nurses try it because it sounds 'glamorous,' with all the TV emphasis on forensics, but quickly drop out when they find out it isn't anything like TV. Plus, when their pager starts going off at 0300 in the morning the glamor wears off. Some have children that can't be left alone or other responsibilities and can't be available for on-call hours.
I still love it, after being a nurse for 32 years and in forensics for 16. In fact, I have worked in 3 SANE programs, taking call on different days/nights and then I started a program which I built from the ground up until I started my own sexual assault center in 2003. I will not consider a nurse, to work for me unless she/he has taken the course.
If you're interested, take the class. The knowledge certainly can't hurt. Classes are anywhere from $450 to $1000.000.
Who is teaching the class in Indianapolis?
