Nurses offer TLC to bereaved parents

Linda Solano has been a registered labor and delivery nurse for 17 years. And, for the most part, her job is a happy one filled with flowers, balloons and the joy of new life.

But every so often, the anticipation of that new life is replaced by a loss. A baby dies. A woman miscarries.

Those times, Solano said, can be difficult for the hospital staff, but they are, of course, much more difficult for the parents.

In the interest of taking care of those who have lost babies as well as those who are walking out of the hospital with children, Solano and fellow nurse Laurie Smeal have formed a Bereavement Committee for Mount Nittany Medical Center's labor and delivery wing.

It was not, Solano said, that the hospital didn't look after those who had lost either a pregnancy or child. It was just that, she thought, it was sometimes spotty.
