Nurses' medical power expanded under House-passed initiative

ATLANTA - Tackling the latest bid to grant health care providers more authority, the House voted Thursday to allow advanced practice registered nurses to write prescriptions they can already authorize by telephone.
If the bill passes the Senate, it could improve access to health care and save patients visits to doctor's offices, said state Rep. Sue Burmeister, R-Augusta.

"These APRNs are physician extenders into areas that badly need medical coverage," said Burmeister, the bill's sponsor.

After brief debate, the legislation passed by a 146-6 vote.
Current law allows APRNs - nurses who hold master's degrees and are certified by a national board - to phone in prescriptions but not write them. Burmeister said Georgia is the only state that doesn't extend those privileges to nurses.
