Ginger Bauer is far from a typical registered nurse who walks hospital halls and monitors patients and high-tech equipment.
She wears no uniform, except for the badge identifying her as a nurse with the Pennsylvania Elks Home Service Program. She carries medical supplies in her car -- gown, mask, gloves, rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs -- but rarely performs hands-on nursing.
Her job as an advocate for children and adults with mental and physical disabilities requires her to cut more red tape than surgical tape. "I have Band-Aids, but most people don't need Band-Aids. They need help: food and housing, real assistance," said Bauer, a self-described jack-of-all-trades in human services
