Re: Nurses: Don't believe everything you see on TV

I dislike most medical shows, Scrubs is the exception, although I do find Zach Braff annoying from time to time. Scrubs is not free of errors, either...... Carla the nurse once tells Zach that she "never went to college". On the whole though, better than most of the others out there.

Oh yes, and I am so vocal about my concerns while watching bad medical tv, that my ex-husband refused to watch them with me EVER!!!

The UK programme 'Casualty' is a lot more nurse centred. It's a sort of UK 'ER' .

i try to just watch and take them for what they are, entertainment..but it does get very silly and down right stupid at times. you are right, we get the average patient all the time quoting what they saw on those shows and even recommend their tx based on it.

Re: Nurses: Don't believe everything you see on TV

There have been shows that are about nursing and none have survived more than a season, it's much more melodramatic when it involves the physicians. BTW, to see Hugh Laurie in a different role see the BBC's "Black Adder III," he plays the abcolutely clueless Prince.

There have been at least 2 shows centered on nursing, unfortunatly the have never lasted more than 1 season, google Michel Learned. As for Hugh Laurie, I've had the pleasure of watching him on the BBC series "Black Adder III" He plays an absolutely clueless Prince George IV. What a hoot!

How about Hugh Laurie as a semi-clueless but well-heeled Brit from the 1920's. Bertie Wooster is a hoot. Jeeves and Wooster is available on DVD and must be seen to be believed. He sings, plays the piano, and gets himself in ever-so-much trouble. You can maybe talk yourself into the idea that Bertie is a distant forebear of Greg House.

I can't even think of one show-ever- that centered around nurses.

I think it's time!
There was one. A little over ten or fifteen years ago (memory fails) there was a TV drama called Nurse, featuring on-duty floor nurses as the main characters. It was a bomb. Just awful. Cancelled before the end of the first season, to no one's regret. Why? Because the writers built plots around the nurses' personnal lives (which were really boring) and completely ignored the nurse as a knowllegable clinician making a decissions that make a difference in the lives of the sick and injured, which is what makes doctor shows interesting.

Guilty confession: On Friday nights I draw the curtains closed, sneek into my room, turn down the volume on the TV so nobody hears, and watch House. It is a cartoon, as unrealistic as it can be. Why do I like it? Because, though House is a TERRIBLE doctor, he speaks often of the absurdities of the disfunctional culture of hospitals. It is the only (semi)accurate part of the show, but I take a wicked satisfaction in hearing Hugh Lowrey reveal that the emporer is not wearing any clothes. (Still, I cannot help thinking that those doctor could get more sleep and do better work if the hospital would hire a nursing staff. They do have some women in white uniforms walking around, but I have never seen a nurse do any nursing on that show.)

Amazingly, the public seems to take their cues on how to behave when a loved one is a patient from TV dramas. Family members holding health care staff hostage until they get what they want, bringing guns into the ICU to euthanize Mother, throwing hissy fits because that cup of ice water was delayed by the patient down the hall who had the audacity to respiratory arrest and just generally behaving like asses all bring drama to a TV show. But those behaviors have no place in the real world, and the public doesn't seem to be smart enough these days to get that!

Speaking of Hugh Laurie, his name should be McReamy.
I'm from the UK, and as I'm sure you know, Hugh Laurie is a very famous British comedy actor. I just can't take him seriously in House. If you ever saw some of the characters he played back home, I think you'd be disappointed. He's certainly not attractive when in his comedy persona.

The nurses would most likely either be nymphomaniacs, or homicidal maniacs.[/quote]

Sounds pretty realistic to me Just kidding.
