Georgetown University professor Barbara Aranda-Naranjo, RN, PhD, professor, School of Nursing and Health Studies developing model nursing program to assist federally funded clinics.

....To help level the playing field and encourage more nurses to consider careers in community health, GU-NHS has received a grant from AmeriCorps to develop the first professional nurse corps for the nation. Dubbed “Nurses for America,” the program will recruit a corps of 20 RNs, to be hired by federally funded “safety net” clinics in Washington, D.C., Alameda, Calif., and East St. Louis, Ill....

Applicants to the program will come to GU-NHS for a community health immersion training program in the summer of 2006. They will also receive salaries from the clinics and continuous mentoring during their two-year service commitment. At the completion of each year of service, the nurse members will receive an educational award of $4,725 to repay qualified student loans or pay for graduate school....
