WORCESTER— The union representing 900 registered nurses at UMass Memorial Medical Center is taking an increasingly militant stance in its strained contract talks with hospital management, with union leaders planning to deliver an uncompromising petition to CEO John G. O’Brien tomorrow.
The union is demanding that the hospital “remove all your concessionary demands from the bargaining table,” according to the petition, which has been signed by more than 700 nurses so far.
Since talks on a new contract began in December, management has stuck to a tough bargaining position of calling for major cuts in nurses’ pension and health insurance benefits, arguing that savings are needed to ensure the long-term fiscal stability of the hospital.
