Nurse shortage has NYC trying to entice Hoosier nurses

"
In May, Beth Israel Medical Center in New York caused an uproar in Indianapolis when it placed a half page ad in The Indianapolis Star offering senior registered nurses $15,000 signing bonuses to pack up and move north."

In addition to the bonus, Beth Israel promised the excitement of New York City. But many Indiana nurses had reservations."

In a related article:

Shortage of teachers means shortage of nurses

"The problem is not, as many people assume, that no one wants to go into nursing. In fact, enrollment at nursing schools was up in 2007 for the seventh straight year. More than 30,700 qualified applicants were turned away.

“Part of it is that faculty salaries are much lower than clinical salaries, so a nurse with a master’s degree can probably make $30,000 more in general out in clinical practice than she’ll make teaching,”

How long have we been talking about the low salaries paid to nurse faculty? By my estimation at least three years if not longer. One has to ask why this hasn't been addressed.

you can't blame someone for trying to better themselves but this leaves facilities who can't afford to pay premium wages in a bad position not to mention all the nurses left behind who will have larger patient loads

I gotta admit, that New York sure is a tempting prospect. Wages in my area suck royally, and with gas and food soaring, it's getting tough to get by anymore.

And most nursing programs do have long waiting lists and are slow to replace faculty that leave. I've heard of people being waitlisted for 1-2 years lately.

On the other hand, according to our BON newsletter, about 1 in 4 currently licensed nurses in my state are not practicing nursing either.

NYC is a great place. I grew up there and left in my early 20's. The reason I left was the cost of living. On a nurses salary you'll live decently but most of your money will go towards rent $1200-1300/mo just for a studio or 1 bedroom (if your lucky) in Brooklyn. One advantage is the Mass Transit System b/c it is well developed.

I love how whoever wrote that article mentioned the price of a 1 bedroom in NYC as being $3,000.
Of course, there are many decent neighborhoods other than Soho, & the Upper East and West sides. So any nurse paying 3K for a 1 bedroom really just wants to.

I'm not saying it is not expensive- I'm saying they used a very high amount which some may think is an average rent payment. There are expensive apartments in every borough- there are also reasonable ones in safe neighborhoods.

Very interesting, esp since I live in IN. But I am a new grad and love my job so 15000 couldn't get me to leave it. Do you think some of it could be because of the Magnet status that is at the 3 main hospitals? I kind of do, since there are only a few Magnet hospitals in the country.

What I found interesting was that the vacancy rate was on 3% in IN. BRAVO.
