nurse honored for her life-saving action

LAPORTE — On a cold day in March, Earl Woodruff, 80, of Michigan City, was using a snow blower in his driveway when he had a heart attack and passed out.

The self-propelled snow blower dragged Woodruff across the street where it stopped, leaving Woodruff face down in the snow.

A witness dialed 911, but before emergency personnel could arrive, Sue DeHaan, a nurse from Michigan City who was driving by, performed CPR on Woodruff and saved his life.

Woodruff, along with his family, was able to thank DeHaan personally Wednesday afternoon after the LaPorte County Emergency Medical Service presented her with The Susan Kolar Award for Citizen Lifesaving during an EMS Week ceremony.
