Nurse helps at accident scene

GREENFIELD - Patricia Coffin usually sees accident victims after they've been boarded, buckled and put on stretchers by emergency medical workers on an ambulance.

But earlier this week, Coffin, an emergency room nurse at Franklin Medical Center, found herself the first person on the scene of a car accident.
"I knew it was serious," Coffin said about her first reaction.

She and her husband, Thomas, were on Cape Cod for a weekend wedding. On Sunday morning, they were driving on West Yarmouth Road in Yarmouth to have breakfast. Ahead of them, they watched as a Chevrolet Lumina went out of control on a curve, flipped several times and hit a tree.
Coffin, who was driving, pulled over and told her husband to call 911.
"He was fabulous," she said of her husband, adding, "He didn't want to get too close."

Coffin found an 18-year-old man in the back seat of the car, having been thrown there from the driver's seat. He was unconscious, but later regained consciousness.

Re: Nurse helps at accident scene

I have been at 2 accident scenes! The first, a semi rolled over and pinned the guy. I was going to drive on past and only then realized there were no EMS there!!! So I stopped and ran back as fast as I could. I later found out that he died at the scene.

The second, this kid hit the house across the street, I ran over there as he fell out of his car and ran across the yard before hitting the ground. I stabalized his neck and the EMS got there quick too, don't know what happened to him.....

I also got to help when a gentleman passed out at my ex-husband's grandfather's funeral. Good thing Jay's uncle Paul was a paramedic!!! We sent him with the EMS to the hospital....

Now I am afraid to go to funeral of the elderly because the visitors might pass out!!!
