The Philippines exports 15,000 nurses a year, and it's estimated that 1 in 10 Filipinos now works abroad. The nursing drain could have a crippling effect on the Philippines healthcare system.

Wow, 1 in 10 that's a lot. I think it's becoming part of their culture to work abroad and send money home. I read of a lot of domestic workers, maids and such, have went to work abroad in richer countries, such as the oil rich nations of the Arab world. So it's not just nurses. Obviously the bulk of them are nurses.

Interesting.

"Some hospitals don't even have nurses at all."

However, "overseas workers send about 8 billion dollars a year home...." it's an important source of income in their economy.

2500 leave to work overseas every day.

Appalling and it should stop.
I wonder how much money the US government sends the Phillipines every year to "help" them out with their medical problems or any problem.
If they keep their own people home and working then many of their own problems would be solved.
This is not new news. I believe this has been a chronic problem for years.

Sad but true...

Tell that to our politicians who are so indifferent to us.

No Philippine nursing shortage

I would disagree that there will ever be a shortage of nurses in the Philippines. In fact, we are turning out more nurses than we will ever need in this country. It is just the Philippine government and the media trying to blow things out of proportion. There is, and there will never be a shortage of nurses or doctors in the Philippines. The possibility of this happening now and in the near future is extremely improbable. Crippling the healthcare system? -NO WAY.

Look why Millions of US dollars are going for aid to the Phillipines at a time they are exporting their best and brightest.

I agree that there is no shortage of nurses in the Philippines. As for doctors, there is a shortage willing to work in the provinces. The government who is indifferent to the people tend to blow things out of proportion.
