Norwegian hospital to equip babies with anti-theft alarms

OSLO (AFP) - A Norwegian hospital said Monday it was planning to equip all newborn babies with anti-theft alarms to protect them from kidnappings and help avoid identity mix-ups.

"The main reason is that we want to emphasise security," Erik Normann, head of the Akershus University Hospital near Oslo told AFP.

"There was a period in which Norway experienced several infant kidnappings and that is something we want to avoid," he said.

Re: Norwegian hospital to equip babies with anti-theft alarms

My hospital (Texas) actually already has these. The child has one attached to one of their limbs and if they cross certain points in the unit a siren goes off. Elevators shut down and a code purple is called. They also have a GPS like band attached to them called radiance. We can see where they are in the entire hospital. We use these on all patients and even equipment like wheelchairs and bladder scans, etc.

Re: Norwegian hospital to equip babies with anti-theft alarms

I work at a small 137 bed hospital on coastal NC, we've had the "code alert" system for the passed 10 years that I have worked labor and delivery, it works well, if the baby passes infront of any outage or door that may come open within 10 feet of the infant, bells and whistles go off, a code has to be keyed into the key pad associated with that door to disalarm it if it was a coincidence that that door was open (ie elevator, stairwell, etc) Also the alarm will activate if it is tampered with in ANY way, even if the baby kicks at it sometimes. It has been a good system, we still do our Code Black drills though.
