New Reg: Medicaid prescriptions be written on "tamper-resistant" pads by Oct 1st,07

Found at ANA Smart Brief:

New prescription rule could be problem for Medicaid patients

A new requirement that A new requirement that Medicaid prescriptions be written on "tamper-resistant" pads could cause problems for millions of patients. Most doctors do not use the pads, which will be required as of Oct. 1, which could result in limited access to needed drugs, an official of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores said.

Should be a requirement for everyone. Or are they implying that only poor people try to obtain meds illegally?

Re: New Reg: Medicaid prescriptions be written on "tamper-resistant" pads by Oct 1st,

While I agree that we need to have this security in place for all scripts, not just our Medicaid patients, as a practice owner I have to also look at the cost of care and the burden this potentially adds to practices. (Cost in terms of supplies, staff time, possibly technology needs.)

So, what's the answer? I'm not sure. I currently use an EMR system, but there is not an e-prescribing solution that is currently compatible with it, however that is the direction I am looking for all my prescribing.

I've posted my own rant about this topic on my blog and I'll mention it here...I resent the fact that yet another rule is placed on prescribers and practices, yet I often see patients who are not at all held accountable for their behavior and actions. What's wrong with this picture?

I agree.

What's EMR, btw? Are those the computer-printed 'scripts?

EMR= Electronic Medical REcord.

My PCP using Apple based EMR system past 5+ years. All RX recorded in computer and print out on tamper resistent paper from seperate printer including Name, address, DOB and typed medication list. He then signs at bottom. We discussed it and he has had scant fraud with this system.

That is what my doc uses. I wasn't familiar with 'emr'. Thanks

Re: New Reg: Medicaid prescriptions be written on "tamper-resistant" pads by Oct 1st,

I have not seen a script pad in the last several years that is not tamper resistant so I personally don't know what the big deal is. Most will show void if copied and smudged if erased. As far as not being able to afford pads, every doctors office I have ever been in recently had stacks of those free ones, the name of the company escapes me at this time.

I'm new - Hello everyone! I've heard from other nurses the problems of Medicaid - this may not be the solution for everyone, but dr's offices which have EMR's may want to consider...a Star prescription printer. They aren't cheap, but they do print our tamper proof rx's.
