WASHINGTON - The city of New Orleans has only 456 staffed hospital beds, compared with 2,269 before the city was struck by Hurricane Katrina, according to government auditors who say rebuilding the health care system will be vital for bringing people back.

While emergency care is available, auditors noted that patients at two hospitals waited up to two hours to be unloaded from ambulances. They also found patients being kept and treated in the emergency room because beds weren't available elsewhere.

Once a saw a reality medical show which featured Charity Hospital. At the time I was so impressed with the fact that the poor and disenfranchised had a place to go. How terrible for the people that this hospital is closed.

I agree that rebuilding the hospital system is very important to the state's revitalization...I'm so impressed by how hard the state and the city has worked to get back to what it was and believe that it will continue to strive further!

I know many musicians who evacuated are now in other states. Those with health conditions or who are older want so much to return home. Fear of a lack of emergency and routine healthcare is a big factor in their working out of state.
MANY are in Austin. These are people with insurance or Medicare/AARP.

Storm Evacuees Found to Suffer Health Setbacks

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/18/us...rtner=homepage

Families displaced by Hurricane Katrina are suffering from mental disorders and chronic conditions like asthma and from a lack of prescription medication and health insurance at rates that are much higher than average, a new study has found...

...Among the study's findings: 34 percent of displaced children suffer from conditions like asthma, anxiety and behavioral problems, compared with 25 percent of children in urban Louisiana before the storm. Fourteen percent of them went without prescribed medication at some point during the three months before the survey, which was conducted in February, compared with 2 percent before the hurricane....

...Forty-four percent said they had no health insurance, many because they lost their jobs after the storm, and nearly half were managing at least one chronic condition like diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer. Thirty-seven percent described their health as "fair" or "poor," compared with 10 percent before the hurricane....

...Instead of being given a chance to recover, the study says, "Children and families who have been displaced by the hurricanes are being pushed further toward the edge."...
