New nurses grant will help, yet more must still be done

Your last hospital visit may not be a memory you want to cherish, but chances are you survived not just because of the doctors, surgeons and staff, but because of the hard work of the nurses on call. However, these angels of mercy, male and female, are in short supply today.

There are a lot of reasons for the tight nursing supply in the medical field. Rising numbers of elderly, who require greater care than younger patients, are one reason. This widens the nurse-to-patient ratio.

Another reason has been past practice by some hospitals to shift some care responsibilities from licensed practical and registered nurses to less highly trained health care staff in order to cut down on costs. Other reasons cited by nurses leaving the field in the past are the lack of benefits these hard-working professionals believe they are entitled to.
