ENGLEWOOD -- Nurses at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center served notice Saturday that they intend to strike on June 29 unless they have a new contract that preserves their pension plan.
Contract talks broke off around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, after both sides refused to budge on the pension issue. Hours later, the union representing 660 nurses at the hospital, the Health Professionals and Allied Employees union, formally issued a 10-day notification that it intends to strike if a new contract isn't in place by June 29.
Talks are to resume on Wednesday -- which will give both sides a week to find a way to overcome the impasse. Neither side sounded very optimistic on Saturday.
"The nurses do not want to strike, but they will if they have to," said Jeanne Otersen, an HPAE spokeswoman.
