Staffing levels crucial as strike continues
August 16, 2004
Registered nurses at Mt. Clemens General Hospital soundly rejected a proposed 3-year contract Sunday that would have ended the 7-day-old strike.
Three-quarters of the nearly 400 nurses who voted turned down the contract, which would have given them 3-percent annual raises and frozen health care-premium contributions.
Union leaders said management's proposal did not address the fundamental issue at the heart of the strike: staffing levels that could endanger patients and put nurses' careers at risk.
