MRSA, another setback

MRSA bug gains resistance
Scientists in the UK have discovered MRSA bacteria which are increasingly resistant to the "last resort" antibiotic in the war against superbugs, it has emerged.

A study in eight countries, including the UK, found MRSA bacteria that was becoming more resistant to vancomycin.

The news has worried scientists as vancomycin has been the last antibiotic which could be relied on to kill the MRSA superbug, which strikes about 7,000 patients a year in this country.

Doctors have created the superbugs themselves through overzealous, and /or innappropriate treatment. But notice the hoopla surrounds the awful nurses who 'spread' the infections vs why the bugs are here and why they are winning.

It's long been known and observed that our Doctors are great transmitters of bacteria, especially when checking surgical wounds. Out of Australia - have you heard of MRAB? Found in ICU then half a GIT ward had to be in isolation - with correct infectious precautions undertaken. With an effective result.

what scares me most, is that many LTC facilities that I have been in, do not have isolation rooms. So an elderly patient with MRSA will be placed in a room with one who is not infected. Talk about infection control.

MRSA in LTC

I used to work in a LTC facility but now work for the hospital providing Hospice Care. Sometimes my patients are in a LTC (one I used to work for as well) and they just look at me as if I were crazy with the percautions we use with MRSA. (I don't bring any of my equipment into the room, nor patient chart, i gown glove and mask.. thats what they require us to do) When i worked for the LTC *cough*LifeCareCenter*cough*, we would always have residents with MRSA in rooms with others that didn't have it! We would even have residents with resp. MRSA and no warnings before entering the room! Do these idiots even wonder why their rates jump?! It got bad enough that for a while, this facility wasn't ALLOWED to have any new admits because of the outrageous MRSA rate rise. Between sharing a room and other items.. just ugh.. frustrating!
I am MUCH happier working for Hospice now

I can really understand the worry about MRSA in LTc, but multiresistent TBC is another and more difficult decease to treat, just because many old people do have TBC caverne, and when the immunsystem is down--the TBC pops up. Usually I am working with "smittevern" (I dont know the english word), but
as a public and occupational health nurse I can see that Both MRSA, TBC , HIV, Hepatitis and other infectious deceases decreasing in number. I dont think the health system is prepeared. ITS REALLY DANGEROUS!!!
