Moms pre-chewing food gave HIV to kids

"Three such cases were reported in the United States from 1993-2004, government scientists said Wednesday in a presentation in Boston at a scientific conference.

It's blood, not saliva, that carried the virus because in at least two of the cases the infected mothers had bleeding gums or mouth sores, according to investigators at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

Neat article - thanx!

Also, I just gotta tell ya - every time I see your avatar, the massive shark swimming towards those poor people, I get a small fluttery feeling in my chest. While it fascinates me, it also just kinda freaks me out a little (had a bizarre experience as a child).

My avatar is an analogy of how I feel about nurse anesthesia school. I am the guy in the little kayak hoping that the shark/instructor doesn't knock me off my precarious perch and kill me/throw me out of the program.

By the way the picture is of a shark researcher that wanted to be able to get closer to the great white shark for research purposes, and he hypothesized that the shark would probably be curious but otherwise non aggressive towards the kayak.
Pesonally, I am thinking I want a large ship (something about the size of air craft carrier) if I am going to do research on great white sharks.

I once read somewhere that you would need to drink about a pint of saliva to pick up HIV!

Exactly! Kinda reminds me of that crazy Crocodile Guy and the insane things he would do (didn't he end up getting killed by a croc?).

He actually got killed by a sting ray, but it just goes to show you it isn't the instructor/animal you were expecting to get you. It is the benign looking one that gets in the end....lol

Apparently it is a fairly common practice in poorer nations where parents cannot afford baby food.

Interesting that two of these were African-Americans and in the South. I'm from Georgia and have run into pre-chewing like this a couple of times; these were African-American moms, too.

It was by no means common or widespread.
