Just because modern people in the West don't generally do it doesn't make it gross. Some people might think giving a human infant the milk of a goat or cow gross. I don't see anything inherently wrong with chewing food for a baby. Actually, it makes a lot of sense and sounds like natures way to me.

This happens in the animal kingdom, chewing food for their young. Just sounds yuk though, for human babies. I think just the thought of eating something that someone else had chewed first would make people gag. I cant remember chewing food up for my kiddos when they were tiny, dont think I ever did that, but I DO remember that game of encouragement at meal times..." One to you..and one to Mammy!"" (especially with chocolate pudding!) So, I guess its much of the same thing, sharing the spoon.
