Ok, please understand I'm not advocating pre-chewing food here...I agree that it's not healthy for babies, nor good practice.
But what is the difference between Mom's saliva and her breastmilk in terms of being a body fluid? I've read the blog of some doctors in Uganda who encourage HIV+ moms to breastfeed x 6 months to ensure baby gets the antibodies. Apparently the benefits of breastfeeding - esp in a place like Uganda - outweigh the risk of passing on HIV to the baby. Food for thought.
