Investigators begin examination of Los Angeles hospital

Thirteen federal inspectors began a long-awaited examination of the medical competency of troubled Martin Luther King Jr.-Harbor Hospital in Los Angeles, with the facility's future hanging on the outcome. Federal surveyors arrived unannounced and will stay for a week or more to evaluate the hospital on 23 measurements of patient care.

Closing it hardly seems like the right answer. As I understand it, the people in that area have no real other hospital they can easily get to. It would make more sense to me to fix the problems than close it.

They've been saying they'll fix the problem for years. How long do they get to keep providing substandard care?

Re: MLK: Investigators begin examination of Los Angeles hospital

I used to advocate to keep it open.
But the County Supervisors just hired consultants, closed the excellent Trauma ER, and didn't fix the problems.

I think there is some real curruption but don't know specifics. Too much money has disappeared.

Personally I wish it could be run by nuns I knew who were tough, kind, smart, and competent. They are all too old or already in heaven.

It is a beautiful hospital so just maybe some one can re open it as the excellent hospital Kenny Hahn envisioned.
It hurts me that Dr. Kings name is associated with what that place became.

MLK Hospital is a long-standing thorn in the flesh. It's been called "Killer King" years before this scandal was made public. I agree that it is a shame that this fiasco of a facility is named after such an important person.

Closing it is NOT the answer. The population it serves are predominantly African American and Hispanic who have little to no access to routine care. It's true that the nearest facility with equivalent Trauma care is miles away. It could very easily be argued that closing MLK is "profiling".

The "fix" was voted in because people were lied to about the fact that things would dramatically change if it was "joined' with the noted neighbor to the south: Harbor UCLA. I'm one person that hoped patient care would get better. It is a very complicated situation with no easy solution.

IMO, a facility with the positive aspects of MLK (trauma care) does need to be in that area, but not at the expense of basic human dignity.
