As a black male nurse, Abiodun Raimi is a rarity in the Lansing area.
About 7 percent of mid-Michigan registered nurses identify themselves as minorities, compared to about 12 percent statewide, according to a report by the Michigan Center for Nursing in Okemos. As a result, minorities may feel less comfortable in hospital settings or find themselves misunderstood because of cultural differences.
State and local health officials say that has to change.
