Michigan's nurses deserve better working conditions

Gov. Jennifer Granholm and the Michigan Legislature have recognized that Michigan has a patient safety crisis. Our health system is broken and must be fixed now.

Opinions: The governor established a State Commission on Patient Safety, which received testimony from numerous health care experts, hospital executives, staff and patients from across the state. The Legislature is prepared to introduce bills to improve patient safety in 2005. The simple fact is that patients and nurses face unsafe conditions today in Michigan hospitals.

The Michigan Nurses Association anticipates that the Michigan Legislature will conduct public hearings on proposed safe patient care legislation in early 2005. The safe patient care legislation, introduced by Sen. Bruce Patterson, R-Canton, would positively change our health care system, save patient lives, save money and improve the quality of care for every patient in Michigan hospitals. The bottom line is that safe patient care legislation is good public policy - and good for Michigan's economy.

Thank goodness they don't have Jesse Ventura or the Governator.
