Man commits suicide after walking into hospital's ER

A man shot and killed himself in the emergency room at Swedish Medical Center early Sunday, Englewood police said.

The 43-year-old man walked into the emergency room and said he wanted to visit a friend, according to police spokesman Jim Ulrich. The man then pulled out a gun and shot himself.

"It happened very quickly," Ulrich said. "There was no standoff, and he didn't threaten any employees."

Hospital workers tried to resuscitate the man but were unsuccessful. The man's motive for suicide was not known. The Denver Post is not publishing his name.

The hospital's emergency department diverted ambulance traffic and was closed to visitors for several hours Sunday morning.

Police recovered a bag left by the man near the security desk, and the Arapahoe County bomb squad blew it up, Ulrich said.

The bag contained some bullets and magazines but no explosives, he said.

Thanks for the info. It gets scarier and scarier to work in the ER now days. I worked in an ER several years ago where a man shot himself just outside the ambulance bay doors. We had a code entry door and he had been seen wandering around outside the door prior to the shooting. He left a note saying he did it at the hosptal so he could be an organ donor. Sad and scary.

What a horrible case. I have a cousin who used to work at that very hospital. I feel horrible for all the ER staff on duty when that happened. Hopefully, they will receive plenty of counseling and debriefing. This is horrible./

Actually pretty thoughtful of him. Poor guy. I am betting he struggled with bipolar disorder. It seems as if I have met more than a dozen people in my lifetime---a couple of them incredibly talented and skilled physicians--who took their lives this way, after struggling with the illness their entire lives. Their families were never surprised--often it was not the first attempt--just the only successful one.

I hope that they WERE able to use his organs, so that SOME good came out of this tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with the people he left behind.

It is just sad this person chose to do this in a hospital ED, where other patients and medical/nursing staff and employees will be forever scarred by this experience. I hope his organs were worth it. I am saddened and angered by it, myself.
