Magnet Hospital?

I was asked today if the hospital where I work is a magnet hospital? I don't have a clue as to what that means and if we are a magnet hosp or not? Anyone know what that means? Thanks!

Magnet hospital is a designation from the ANA through the ANCC and it is to recognize hospitals that exceed nurses expectations in the form of recognition, tuition reimbursement and empowerment. It is a good thing for nurses.

I looked into a magnet hospital, and the tution reimbursement was lower that most hospitals in the area. The turn over rate was high for new grads, and new hires during the first year. Did I miss something?

Here is a good link. This info was posted in another thread, but I think it does show there is more to the story than what the credentialing arm of the ANA is stating. It seems to raise some valid points:http://www.massnurses.org/pubs/positions/magnet.htm

Very good link. The "magnet" hospital I looked into as a possibile employer has some of the highest malpractice output in my area. When are nurses going to get something real?
