SACRAMENTO (KRON) -- Nurses at University of California medical centers throughout the state were planning to walk off the job Thursday to protest proposed changes to their contract. But on Wednesday, a judge put a stop to that plan.
A Sacramento Superior Court judge issued a temporary restraining order, which puts the brakes on the nurses' plans to hold a one day walkout.
The request to block the strike came from the Public Employment Relations Board, which ruled Tuesday that a strike would be illegal because the nurses had not exhausted their negotiating options before calling a strike.
Wednesday morning, the nurses descended on a UC Regents meeting to let them know firsthand that they felt it was the UC negotiators who were not bargaining in good faith.
Nurses are opposed to proposed cuts in retirement benefits.
They also say UC refuses to put language into the contract guaranteeing nurse-patient ratios, which is now the law in California. After finding out a judge put a halt to the strike, nurses attacked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
