Re: Immigrants Sedated Without Medical Reasons.

I wonder if it's possible that this story, as many are, is slanted toward it's shock value? Just because it's the Post doesn't make it necessarily the truth.

Yes I DO have strong feelings about this because..if we fail on the basic human rights and dignity of ALL people especially as a nurse...then what are we all about...this is not to say that the people that try to "cross" are in the right but sedating them for nooooo medical reason is wrong..I for one as a nurse would tell themo this yourself...my job is to help people and not harm them...no matter who they are..remember when....people got beaten to say at the least for who they are..what they believed and..stood for..prayed too..looked down on..why???
and not so long ago people with a mental illness...had very little rights..locked up like prisoners....no compassion..why did take us soo long to understand and accept the people that are different...
sorry that this thread is so long...I just feel that as a nurse we must help people and I for one would not sedate a person on account of reasons other than medical...thats me..I do not agree with those that would however everyone is free to believe what they want to....and I respect that.
To veer slightly from the main topic here - regarding your sentence about mentally ill patients - yes, we got them out of the state hospitals - now they are living under bridges and dying on the streets as victims of crime and their own untreated illness - this is better how? I have strong feelings on this too - used to be a psych nurse until this push for deinstitutionalization started and watched them harrass and push out patients who had lived there for 30 + years. When an elderly lady faced with transfer to a community placement selectively quits taking only her cardiac meds that says quite a bit. Adequate community help never has existed - victim of the NIMBY syndrome.
(Now returning you to your regularly scheduled thread.....)

I live in New Orleans. The Charity system that provided psychiatric care for the city before the storm no longer exists and there are very few psych beds in the city now. Several months ago there was a plan to open inpatient psych services in an existing building next to Aududon Park. The neighbors put a stop to that - NIMBY!

Thank you MD.
Two thumbs up. Sardonic humour. Effective usage, appropriate timing, perfect subject matter.

Re: Immigrants Sedated Without Medical Reasons.

I'm an immigrant and I don't find sedation barbaric. Whatever makes the process easier to complete is up for grabs IMO. Once someone comes in illegally they need to face the consequences. They've implied consent to whatever the system does to handle them.

Re: Immigrants Sedated Without Medical Reasons.

if there is no resistance, sedation is not justified.
however, for those who are anxious, distraught and/or unwilling, it's an appropriate intervention to be used, not abused.

I think 'resistance' needs to be defined too.
There are times when not signing a voluntary departure order is appropriate (oh, say like when you're a US CITIZEN, or when you have a legitimate reason under immigration law to fight the deportation order). That shouldn't be classified as resistance. OTOH, physical violence I could see as a reason.

I could see this getting abused in a big, big way, though. And that is why I'm more or less opposed to the whole practice.

There are cases of (now) twentysomethings being deported who lived lawfully in the US from the age of 2. They have no cultural connection to their new country and are now in fact stateless as a result of our process.

A young American male of Mexican descent who was born in this country was deported when he was stopped by immigration because he was somewhat mentally challenged and he was unable to answer their questions satisfactorily. ICE basically shrugged their shoulders when his mom went to them looking for help. I wonder if she ever found her boy.

I remember that story, and don't know what ever came of it. That was kind of the situation I had in mind when posting.
