"If nurses want better pensions, they should marry better"

I cannot believe this quote from the CEO and founder of Aurora healthcare in Milwaukee, WI

http://www.jsonline.com/bym/news/jun05/335734.asp
Portion of article below:
Posted: June 22, 2005

About 150 nurses and technicians plan to do their best to stop a pension cut that hit most of their 24,000 co-workers at Aurora Health Care last year.

The nurses and technicians, who work at Aurora Burlington Memorial Hospital, are represented by Federation of Nurses and Healthcare Professionals. The change in Aurora's pension went into effect last year for employees under age 55. But it has become an issue in the current contract negotiations.

"We are the only people who can say no," said Candice Owley, the state president of the Federation of Nurses and Health Professionals, whose union represents the only organized nurses in the Aurora system.

They probably also are the only ones who could stage a protest, aimed at G. Edwin Howe, Aurora's president, titled "Will you marry me, Ed Howe?"

The union contends that during the negotiations, an Aurora representative said that if the nurses and other workers wanted better pensions, they should marry well. That purported comment is behind a planned protest at Aurora's headquarters today that includes several workers dressed as brides.

"Ed Howe understands the need for a good pension - he has an outstanding pension for himself," Owley said. "And our nurses have a very modest pension."

The Aurora president made about $3.2 million in 2003, including $1.3 million contributed to a supplemental retirement plan and deferred compensation, according to an annual report filed with the Internal Revenue Service.
Any suggestions for a letter I am writing to him??

Some people are so clueless and unempathetic to persons whose lifestyles may not mirror their own, it's sad.

Of course, it's a good arguement for gay marriage.

sorry guys and gals...I always tend to find the humor in things...thus the above quotes. It's just how some people say things that make me laugh.

Okay...I'll try to get serious here for a second. My "husband" (for lack of a better word) used to tell me he married a nurse (me) to take care of him in his crippled years because he was convinced he would need one. Well...he's a nurse too, so I told him to nurse himself or hire one because he couldn't afford me as a nurse off of a soldier's retirement/pension.

In this day of companies gutting their pensions for employees who've been there all their lives (airlines come to mind) the nurse's pension might be all they have. It should be criminal, but far too many get away with it, scot free.
