Hospice floor offers new service

Last week Columbia Memorial Hospital opened its newly renovated and expanded hospice, which has places for 10 patients, according to Jane Erlich, hospital president and CEO. She describes it as a departure from the more usual outpatient hospice care. The rooms and the nursing staff are from the hospital, and the hospital has a contract with Community Hospice of Columbia-Greene to provide hospice services.

"They are specifically trained in these services," says Leitha Pierro, vice president of clinical operations at CMH. "Hospice patients can have their families around them, hear the music they love and live with some familiar belongings. Thanks to the Community Hospice, there are trained volunteers to be there when families can't be or if there is no family."
