Health insurer tied bonuses to dropping sick policyholders

One of the state's largest health insurers set goals and paid bonuses based in part on how many individual policyholders were dropped and how much money was saved.

Woodland Hills-based Health Net Inc. avoided paying $35.5 million in medical expenses by rescinding about 1,600 policies between 2000 and 2006. During that period, it paid its senior analyst in charge of cancellations more than $20,000 in bonuses based in part on her meeting or exceeding annual targets for revoking policies, documents disclosed Thursday showed.

How does this type of corporate behavior advance the public interest?

I honestly don't know why we as providers, citizens or patients tolerate this insanity.

In the very near future, I am afraid we will see more of this. The trend is going to be provide preventative medicine and encourage and reward this practice. It will also fine and negate those policy holders who practice unhealthy activities. IE, smokers, drinkers, drug abuse, high risk jobs and hobbies. Large policy holders with employees with these lifestyles will be fined and encouraged to drop those that fall into the guidelines.
This week alone, I have received three taped calls from my provider with reminders of things I should be doing!
The powers that be will reward the bigwigs who can provide the most damage. |
heathy lifestyles need to be encouraged but what will happen to our already burdened society when we have millions more without any healthcare?

This article is a powerful argument for single payer.

HM2Viking - this was my first thought also. Anyone who doesn't think it could happen to them or to the majority of policyholders should talk to the formerly insured homeowners in FL and the Gulf Coast. It is what happens when insurance becomes primarily a vehicle for making huge profits for stockholders and CEOs rather than as it was originally intended to mitigate financial damage and spread the risk among many.
