Health Insurance Bosses Make Big Bucks

If only half of what the CEO makes could be funneled into direct care and insuring the uninsured....and this is only one state - Massachusetts.

Bay State health insurance bosses are raking in multimillion-dollar pay packages - and politically wired powerbrokers get tens of thousands as part-time directors - even as the state and its taxpayers struggle to pay skyrocketing health care costs, a Herald review shows.

Blue Cross Blue Shield, by far the state’s largest insurer, paid nine million-dollar pay packages - including base salary, bonus, retirement and health care benefits, parking allowances and other perks - to its top executives in 2007. The nonprofit firm’s CEO, Cleve Killingsworth, was paid $3.6 million, including a bonus of $1.8 million, according to compensation records filed with the state Division of Insurance.

Yeh, that last name....aye.

I forwarded this article to some friends who are in denial about the world of health insurance. It's hard for some to believe that it's run as a business.

Anyhow, this article was pretty disturbing.

I'm totally and completely unsurprised. It would have been 'News' if the headline read "Health Insurance Bosses Take Pay Cuts Because of Skyrocketing Healthcare Costs"! Now THAT would be big news!

Isn't it easy to forget that Insurance is a business, and as such, it is out to make a profit. We can't blame a business for doing what a business does.

i can't believe that there are people who don't see insurance as a business
even if they don't buy insurance stock they have to see the news when companies declare a dividend, do they not see the billboards tv ads etc

I hope a lot of people read that article. I want them to know what is going on when the are taking double assignments and being mandated for double shifts. I want them to know the CEO is most likely on a golf course somewhere using a membership that is paid for by corporation. Managers get upset at me over my raging about short staffing and mandation. They don't realized it is related to me being an intellegent human being that knows when they are being screwed.

I've posted this on another thread, but it bears repeating:

I once worked for a HMO whose CEO raked in a cool $32 million dollars in bonuses following their last merger.

Just shameful.
