HCMC nurses agree to union representation

At a time of potentially sweeping changes at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), the hospital's registered nurses have decided to be represented by a union.

The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) announced Monday that federal labor officials have certified it to be the representative for the 1,018 registered nurses at the downtown Minneapolis hospital.

The county is proceeding with plans that will make HCMC part of a separate public corporation in 2007. While the county board will retain oversight, the hospital will be governed by a new board that will set personnel policies, including employee benefits.

"The governance change is happening," said Sue Johnson, an HCMC nurse who helped with the organizing drive.
