Re: Half of U.S. Nurses Bullied on the Job

there is no greater reposit of bullying than you'll find in a nursing school with a power tripping instructor. here you've got someone who has years of working in a profession with an opportunity to bully someone who knows essentially nothing... and who has decided that he/she should determine who is "worthy of the profession" and is a self appointed gate keeper.

The general public has taken notice of this, too. Yesterday afternoon, a radio DJ was talking about the study and had a lengthy call-in segment where he spoke with a lot of nurses.

I caught her talking behind my back to another nurse at the nurses station and she gave me absolutely no positive feedback that day and only hounded me about everything I didn't do, or did wrong. I won't ever forget her.

I didn't experience any problems with the doctors and quite honestly, most of them went the extra mile to help me and show me things I didn't know.

Of course I know I'm a new grad without a lot of experience.
imagine the psychology of someone who acts like this? i pity anything they have absolute control over. their home life must really suck. when i was new, i went through some of the same you're going through. in a matter of time, you'll see that those nurses aren't so perfect. i've had the pleasure of rubbing a grevious mistake one of these nurses made right back in her face. after that, she couldn't have been nicer to me, and sugar wouldn't have melted in her sweet mouth.

you will get there. i always do everything i can to help out the newbies. after all, this isn't rocket science. this job is mostly working hard and paying attention to your patients. you'll get the routine down, and it won't seem so overwhelming in a few months.

what is hard and you can never get used to is having too many demands for anyone to physically perform, such as 2 drug seekers, one demented patient trying to fall on you all night long, heavy med schedules.. and then another patient crashes on you.. not to mention all the charting on your 5 to 7 to 9 patients, transfers to icu, and admissions. it is a very tough job, and that's why there are so many jobs available.

Not really profoundly new information is it? All you have to do is read the posts on here and you will find bullying from every angle described by nurses. I would say the bullying for me is nurse first, then management, then pcas, then families (although rare) and I have NEVER been treated poorly by a physician, unless you count the generally negative behavior they exhibit in the OR.

I couldn't have said better myself . I understand that nursing school is hard, but, some instructors go out of their way to ensure that the nursing school experience is the hardest, most difficult time in a students life, just to prove that she/he can.

Re: Half of U.S. Nurses Bullied on the Job

I am a new grad, and I find the most bullying people to be the NAs! There are many of times they tell ME how to do MY job! I have been snapped at by a doctor once but he apologized right afterwards. Family for me has been the worst, I work in the MICU and the family gets very upset over visiting hours and not being able to stay all night. I have been called every name in the book by patients, spit on, kicked, pinched, slapped, etc. I've only been working for 6 MONTHS!! I've already had to get new glasses because my pair was smacked off my face by a patient. The nurses and management have been wonderful though and I have had problems with just one RN since I started. Most of us deal with the same stuff though, and it makes us have to stick together. I think thats the only reason I love my job so much. It's still hard to stick up for myself though, especially since I am the youngest person on my floor. I think the best advice I have learned is to stick to your guns and let people know that you aren't a doormat and wont be treated like one. The hardest part is to learn how to do that in a nice way.

As a two-time hospital patient who had the most wonderful care by my nurses, I find these incidents to be appalling. I had no idea such things went on. Can you do anything about it afterwards? I can think of a couple things, but I'd probably be put in jail.

Re: Half of U.S. Nurses Bullied on the Job

At the last hospital I worked at, they made us go to a mandatory meeting about how to make the doctors happy so that they bring their patients to the hospital.

We were just expected to take the verbal abuse from them. If we complained nothing was ever done. Nurses had no voice at that institution.

If cancer were ever cured, the American Cancer Society would be out of business. Same with MS, CP, DM, and any other diseases or causes.

Do you see? If writers and researchers solve the problems they write about, they won't have that topic to write about any more.

In other words, it is not up to them to solve our problems. Guess who it is up to.
