Future nurses get a career close-up at camp

There's a nursing shortage nationwide, but the future of patient care won't be in much jeopardy -- not if the passion inspired by the region's first Summer Nurse Camp is any indication.

To get invited to the weeklong camp, Puget Sound-area teenagers wrote essays on why they're considering nursing as a possible career. Many recalled personal experiences when a caring nurse helped their families cope with fear and trauma.

Wonder if Nurse Camp includes having to deal with all those lovely bodily fluids/working on an understaffed Unit or dealing with upper Management's unrealistic policies.

Sighs, if only "real life" was like Nursing Camp.

I am not positive, but I think that my alma mater ( Cedarville University -- OH) has a "nurse's camp" for ten agers interested in exploring nursing as a career -- Like the idea! Gie a tiny glimpse at what nurses do -- am not sure what they cover -- probably not anything real indepth in a week -- but it's a start

The idea of the camp is a great idea. I'm concerned that the kids are getting a "sugar coated" version of what Nursing is like. It's fun to see newborn babies and observe surgeries, but when you are actually in the "trenches' performing these jobs, it's a whole different experience.

In High School, I was involved with a Boy Scout Explorer program that emphasized Law Enforcement. It was one the most eye opening experiences that I had-we were allowed to see the good, the bad, and the ugly side of a career in Law Enforcement. Nothing was hidden from us,and it gave us a very realistic expectation of what a career in Law Enforcement was like. I went into that career with "eyes wide open" , and knew exactly what to expect.
