I don't foster, for the simple fact that I KNOW that I am not in a position to do so right now. I didn't say all people that foster are bad, I don't think that at all. But I have worked in pediatrics long enough to see PLENTY of people taking advantage of the system and doing for the wrong reasons.

Cool, understand, but, where do you think these kids should go instead?
Honestly. There isn't anywhere. If you know there is a problem then you either complain about it, or do something about it. Or accept it? There aren't enough people in this world who are "in a position" to foster. Our system is set up to be easily taken advantage of. This is just one of those problems that there is currently no solution for. If it were up to me, child bearing would be seen as a PRIVELEDGE, not a right. But, it isn't up to me and how dare I say that.

So you are saying that since we don't have enough qualified people to do fostering that it is acceptable to place these children with people who abuse THEM and the system? I'm sorry but I don't agree. No I don't know the solution, if I did then I would be doing it. Maybe there will never be a solution to this problem, but it IS NOT ok to excuse the actions of the people. What kind of message are we sending? That oh, these are just foster children, they don't deserve more than a roof over their head, so what if they are being abused and NOT taken care of? I don't think so. They are children just like our children. I am a single mom of 2 and work very hard every single day to take care of my children, and you can bet that when I get into a situation where I am able to I will foster and I will show those kids the love and support and stability that they deserve.

please reread mystcnurse's response below.
she makes it clear that staying w/the natural parents would be disastrous.

i so agree w/you in that parenting should be a privilege and not a right.

I never said that it was always best to leave the kids with their natural parents, many times that is THE WORST thing to do. All I am saying is there is a major problem with the foster care system and no one knows what will make it better. I don't know what would make it better, well I do have a few ideas, but probably nothing the state would ever go for... I feel for these kids, they should be able to be KIDS... and I wish I was where I could take them in but I'm not.
