Enrollment gains putting strain on OSU nursing school

Ohio State University's nursing college will be hard-pressed to continue to match its enrollment gains of recent years, said Elizabeth Lenz, dean of the program.

The problem? There aren't enough qualified faculty, clinical sites for students, classrooms or office space to expand Ohio State's program much more, she said. That is frustrating to Lenz, who said the college and others in Central Ohio are trying to ease the nursing shortage that plagues the region and nation.
In a report to OSU trustees Dec. 3, Lenz cited industry statistics that show there were 126,000 registered nurse vacancies in U.S. hospitals this year and 14,000 openings in nursing homes. Central Ohio and the state haven't been spared from the shortage - more than 7 percent of registered nurse positions are vacant in Columbus and about 6 percent are open statewide, she said.

OSU, one of my old Alma Maters. I'm thinking on returning there in a couple years, maybe go back for my doctorate. I have to wait and see. But, it would be nice to know that I, as a nurse, maybe able to assist one day as a Prof...easing the college's lack thereof and guiding others in becoming new nurses.

big 10 schools

I think if they loosened the criteria for being an educator there and everywhere the nursing educator roles would be filled. I have a master's degree in science with a major in nutrition and the schools won't even let me teach that class let alone a nursing class. On the flip side, I have seen other very educated people not be able to fight their way out of a paper bag.

Since moving here I realize that sometime the big 10 schools are in a world of their own..........enough said.
