Demand grows for more nurses
The profession faces multiple challenges
We're going to need more nurses.
A recent study by the N.C. Center for Nursing projects 2,300 new positions for registered nurses by 2006, a "robust" 5.4 percent increase over 2004
But who's going to fill those jobs? Demand is especially intense because many nurses today are nearing retirement. Of the nation's 2.7 million nurses, the average age is 45.
"That's getting up there," said Barbara Blakeney, president of the American Nurses Association, who spoke in Charlotte recently.
She said it is not difficult to interest young people or second-career types in nursing as a profession, but getting them into school isn't so easy.
