Today is National Nurses Day, honoring women and men who care for the ill and injured unable to care for themselves. This year, it nearly coincides with the 125th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Mercy to Durango. Five nuns left their Motherhouse in St. Louis, Mo., that winter and, after a brief sojourn in Conejos, came to Durango on April 30, 1882. Thus, area nurses can also celebrate the 125th anniversary of nursing in Southwest Colorado. ...
