CMS Would Require Nursing Home Flu Immunizations As Condition of Participation in Medicare and Medicaid
Harrisburg, PA - Tuesday, August 16, 2005
A Center for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS)
proposal, published in the August 16, 2005
Federal Register, would require long-term-care facilities to offer all residents annual flu immunizations as a condition of participation in Medicare and Medicaid and also at least one vaccination against pneumonia if there’s no record of previous vaccination. The proposal supports HHS’ goal of 90% vaccination rates for those viruses among adults 65 and older by 2010. According to Medicare data, the current rates are about 70% for influenza and about 65% for the pneumococcal virus.
CMS and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will host a
Nursing Home Immunizations satellite broadcast and webcast on Thursday, September 8, 2005 from 1:00 pm-3:00 pm EDT.
