Bush Budget Threatens Cut for Advanced Nursing Programs

From Nursing Spectrum:

Bush Budget Threatens Cut for Advanced Nursing Programs

Graduate nursing programs across the country would feel the sting of President Bush's 2008 budget proposal to axe a $58 million program that has helped fund advanced nursing education...

From ANA Capital News:

96 Representatives Support Nurse Appropriations, Senate is Still Counting

In early March, Reps. Lois Capps, RN (D-CA) and Steven LaTourette (R-OH), the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Nursing Caucus, circulated a letter in the U.S. House of Representatives supporting $200 million in FY 2008 appropriations for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs. The final letter, which was delivered to the House Appropriations Committee on March 20, was signed by a bipartisan group of 96 Members of the House of Representatives. Senators Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Susan Collins (R-ME) then circulated a similar letter in the U.S. Senate. This letter is open for Senators to sign through April 3. ANA needs your help! Contact your Senators today to urge them to sign the Mikulski/Collins letter.

Funding for Workforce Development
ANA is working to convince Congres to significantly increase funding for the Nursing Workforce Development programs administered by the Health Resources and SErvices Administration (HRSA) under Title VIII of the Public Health Service Act. We are asking for $200 million in fiscal year (FY) 2008, which would be an increase of $50 million over the FY 2007 funding level.

$200 million is nothing compared to the pork signed into law.

We especially need entry level programs leading to RN licensure and LVN to RN programs.
AND education for those of us who wish so we can become professors and instructors in these programs.
AND we need more CNS and NP programs.
Every unit needs a CNA to educate direct care nurses and keep us current.
Who do they think provides excellent care to underserved areas? Nurse practitioners and Nurse Midwives!

Spacenurse,

You are so right about the $200 million. Although $200 million is definately an improvement from the past ($78 million awarded in 2002 according to JCAHO), it still doesn't compare to the $9 billion awarded in 2002 to fund graduate medical education. I haven't done the research to see how much the medical community is receiving now, so one could only guess it has doubled, too.

I just completed a Capstone Project on the nursing shortage and this country is definately experiencing a shortage. I cited various reasons for this shortage, including adequate federal funding. Bush is an idiot!

They plan on importing all this talent I guess. You won't be able to find a nurse in the Phillipines or Korea to save you life.(I mean that literally and figuatively)

The interest goes to the government if they're federal unsubsidized loans. They cut budgets AND offer interest building loans? Coincidence? The government is trying to promote loans and considering it a HUGE favor to us when it's really a get-rich-quick scheme for them.

Yes, and lets realize that we may be in for more of the same schemes in 2008 if we dont vote wisely. Although Bush may remain legendary as the worst Pres. ever.

The point is that many students who take advantage of the stipend programs repay the cost of the governmental support through contracting to work in underserved areas.

Re: Bush Budget Threatens Cut for Advanced Nursing Programs

How the Atmosphere towards Bush has changed since Nov 2004! I recall then the ANA opposed Bush and went for Kerry(believe they did in 2000 also not 100% sure) and if I recall corectly, quite a few here at AN.com supported Bush and his Iraq War! Now that Iraq (his invasion)has failed and he now has cut this Nursing money wonder what they feel today. Looks like he is trying to extend this War to hand it off to the next president. He will go down in the anals of history as one of the worst presidents, if not the worst, of all times,,,True Ingelein
